Bright Finish
My 5 yr old son is very bright but is very talkative in school?
My 5 yr old son, although very bright and intelligent talks a lot in school. there are days he does not finish his board work either because he was busy chatting or just not doing it. His teachers have brought it to my attention a couple of times and I am very concerned. I'm not sure if I need to spend more time with him trying to teach him how to be quite. If so, I still don't know how else to teach him that.
Suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Boys of five are often excitable and chatty, eager to discuss everything with their friends and teachers. Hopefully, he will learn to be more restrained as he grows up but, for now, you can always ask the teacher to move him to a place with kids he's less likely to talk to and for him to bring his unfinished school work home. When he's doing it at home, explain to him gently that if he did his work at school instead of chatting so much then he would be able to play at home. This way he's learning to not chat so much and is also not missing out on his work.
I wouldn't stress too much though. My brother was a very chatty, boisterous boy all through school (and no doubt, the bane of some teachers' classes!) and he's nearly finished his uni course. On the other hand, I was a very quiet child and I wish I had more confidence. Chatty children are not always going to fail. The ones who do fail are often the children who are also naughty and whose pathetic parents don't bother to curb this bad behaviour leading them to becoming thugs by adolescents. You sound like a decent parent who has a chatty child rather than a naughty one who gets away with it.
