Colonial Crown
In the film the Patriot (Mel Gibson) there is a mention of the loyalist colonial millitia, who were they?
I mean the colonial loyalist millitia is for the crown and British right? but before the revolutionary war General Wilkins is mentioned being part of the colonial millitia, who were they meant to be fighting in the war, the indian-french war was against the British right? then where does this colonial loyalist millitia come ? thanks.
This is before the revolutionary war so who were the colonial loyalist millitia fighting for? if they were fighting for the British against the french-indians then why are they called loyalist colonials? unless some Americans were on the side of the French-Indian right?
Before the war came, all militias were Colonial Militias, and they served the Royal Governors of each Colony. In this role, they formed a very important auxiliary to the British forces deployed in the Americas. The laws of many colonies required each man to serve in the militia and to provide his own weapons. In addition, the King often provided them with powder and with cannon.
However, that had changed by the time of the war. The Colonial militias had been hijacked (if you'll pardon the term) by the Colonial Congresses or Comittees of Safety and this was, in no small part, why the British had to bring troops to places like Boston. The militias continued to serve the Rebel forces throughout the war, alongside the Continental Army. However, perhaps 20% of all Colonial Americans chose to side with the King, and many of them either joined the British forces (recruiting in America was a major source of manpower), or else joined one the the several levels of "Loyalist" American forces. On the top level, many of the Loyalists served in strong, well armed, equipped and trained Loyalist regiments which often had British officers and American enlisted men (like the Loyalist American cavalry that Tarleton leads in the Patriot). Others, espcially in the South or the West of the Colonies, were Loyalist militias. They, like their Rebel (or Patriot, if you prefer) counterparts, were part time soldeirs who would raid those on the other side, or serve alongside the regular forces of their own chosen side, from time to time. It is often (on both sides) these irregular forces or militias, that carried out the most viscious partisan attacks.
