Analine hair dyes for wood stain (maple)?

Any reason why I can't use a brown tone hair dye to stain maple (without the hydrogen peroxide developer, of course). I just experimented with Clairol Medium Reddish Brown on the back of a maple corbel that I want to look a bit darker and more red oak. It looks very natural and even. Most brown dyes are water-soluable analine dyes, and there are tons of colors available.

I haven't tried it, but you are certainly inventive. Seems it would be more $$$ than stain, so not sure why you want to use dye instead. Paint stores can "create" whatever color stain you want.

If you do decide to continue, I would definitely consider using a clear polyurethane over the wood when you are done for lasting durability. It also will make it easier to clean.
